I for one never bought into the "Hydrogen Economy"... we will end up with an "Energy Economy" but what will the source be?
Nuclear Fusion is the only think left in my mind that has the potential to deliver us the energy we need. But even that isn't going to lead us to energy utopia...

From the website, it sounds like the "hydrogen" economy is dependent on these sources of energy..

* Hydroelectric Generation
* Geothermal Electric
* Direct Solar Catalysis
* Biological Catalysis>
* Tidal Power
So I'm wondering WHY we NEED hydrogen? Why not just use these power sources directly to power our homes and factories, and use battery powered vehicles? Skip the wasteful conversion to hydrogen entirely...

You can't use solar after dark unless you save it. You can't have solar power after dark unless you thought ahead to have extra to save.
If you read the spreadsheets that show how PV costs go down as installation increases, the costs of saving solar as hydrogen also goes down at the same rate.

The cost of PV is one-sixth as expensive in 32 years when all US electricity is made from PV, and it's 19% less in 3 more years when there is double the electric power there is now.
In 41 years the cost of PV is one-tenth what it is now ans all energy both electric and mobil is from H2-PV, and in 3 more years, in 2051 it is 1/12th the costs and there is double all the energy used today in all forms available. In 3 more years it is quadruple that, and the cost is 1/14th of present costs. The cost of Hydrogen is reduced accordingly.

None of the Photovoltaic predictions seems to require Hydrogen. Why not do it with Batteries?
What is the efficiency of converting:
Sunlight - electricity - H2 - electricity
compared to converting:
Sunlight - electricity - Batteries - electricity
Hydrogen is simply a STORAGE METHOD for energy, not a SOURCE of energy. And this is what the original post by Zubrin said.
