Chinese Nationalism

Chinese Nationalism and Tibet | Newsweek The Council on Foreign Relations | Newsweek.com

This is good reading, but I don't know enough about Chinese history to know if this is bias or not. It's too easy to pick and choose historic events to make your point.

The reads as if the Chinese government if just doing the best it can to move the country forward.

I support the right of the Chinese people to demonstrate against American or French actions, I just wish they had the same right to demonstrate against their OWN Government's actions without being shot. [This Post Continues after the jump...]

Olympic Gag Order

The British have to sign this, All I can say is that I'm glad the US did not force our athletes to sign something like this. If China wants to play on the world's stage, it needs to either defend or change it actions. And we all know CHANGE is what is needed.

St. Lucia Opens Ties With Taiwan

"The Mouse That Roared" !!!

If only the US would do this also. We went to war in Iraq partially to make it a free democracy, but we don't officially recognize Taiwan which is an established and strong democracy. I don' get it. Now I realize we "unofficially" do a lot for Taiwan, and I think we are required by law to come to Taiwan's aid if they are attacked. But there is a lot of meaning and power in officially recognizing the fact that they are free and independent from China.

China Will Pass U.S. As Polluter in 2007

2.5 years ahead of schedule!!

But hey, China DID sign Kyoto (so they're a "green" country), but so would have the US if we were exempt too!

They can put a man in space, they are hosting the Olympics in 2008, they have Veto ower at the UN, and they can shoot down spy satellites, but hey they're just a "Developing Nation" so give them a break, right?

In China, Talk of Democracy Is Simply That

In China, Talk of Democracy Is Simply That - New York Times

The state-run news media’s newly prolific references to democracy to describe a range of prosaic political actions — like setting up an e-mail address so that the public can comment on pending legislation — so devalue the term that critics of the leadership suspect that Mr. Hu’s goal may be to strip democracy of meaning.

“They want democracy to belong to the party, not to belong to people who oppose the party,” said one retired party official who declined to be identified because top leaders sometimes punish people for discussing elite politics. “If the party can define what democracy is, then it will not be as dangerous.”

Premier Says World Should Not Fear China

Premier Says World Should Not Fear China

"In my view, democracy, the rule of law, freedom, human rights, equality, and fraternity are not something peculiar to capitalism, Wen said
Yes, but Democracy IS peculiar to Democracy. China cannot be a non-democratic democracy. You cannot have a "one party" democracy, and typically you can't have strong state control of the economy in a democracy.

So China needs to make up its mind. [This Post Continues after the jump...]
